Why Post-Surgery Lymphatic Drainage Is Essential — And Why Timing Matters
After surgery, your body goes into healing mode. Swelling, fluid buildup, inflammation, and tissue congestion are all normal responses — but without proper support, they can slow recovery, increase discomfort, and even affect your final results.
Post-surgical lymphatic drainage massage is not a luxury. It is a critical part of the recovery process.
This specialized technique helps your body:
• Reduce swelling and fluid retention
• Minimize bruising and inflammation
• Improve circulation and oxygen delivery to tissues
• Prevent fibrosis (hard lumps or scar tissue formation)
• Decrease pain and tightness
• Accelerate healing time
• Support smoother, more even surgical results
The lymphatic system becomes sluggish after surgery due to trauma, anesthesia, and reduced movement. The first 3–14 days after your procedure are the most important window to begin lymphatic drainage.
Starting early can:
Prevent complications before they develop
Shorten overall recovery time
Reduce the number of sessions needed later
Improve comfort during healing
Protect your surgical investment and results
Waiting too long allows fluid to harden and scar tissue to form, which can make recovery longer, more uncomfortable, and more expensive to correct.
Channels formed by the cannula is where fluid can build up, causing inflammation. Post-op inflammation can evolve into fibrosis (a permanent hardening of the tissue) or a seroma (pocket of serum) can form.
That is why the first few weeks after your operation are the most crucial for smooth healing. But don’t sweat, that’s where we come in! Our massage therapists are specifically certified to perform lymphatic drainage massages with a specialty in post-surgical care.
Think of lymphatic drainage as part of your surgical prescription — not an optional add-on.
Your surgeon performs the procedure.
We support your healing.
When Should You Start?
Most clients begin within 24–72 hours post-procedure (with surgeon approval). The earlier you start, the better your outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Lymphatic Drainage Massages Painful?
1
Not at all! Our therapists are familiar with sensitive, tender bodies. You may feel uncomfortable at the beginning of your post-surgery massage, but by the end, you'll experience immediate relief. As your incisions and bruises heal, your therapists will begin gradually applying more pressure during your massages.
How many treatments will I need?
2
Getting started is simple. Reach out through our contact form or schedule a call—we’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions along the way.
How often are LDMs scheduled?
3
Again, for the smoothest results, 3x a week for the first 2 weeks is the best protocol. The second week, every other day, reducing in frequency after that. It is not possible to get too much MLD and the sessions can be scheduled at your convenience. This might look like:
3 sessions in the 1st week
2x in the 2nd week
2x in week 3
1x/ week
1x/ week
1x/ week
How soon after my procedure can we begin LDMs?
4
It is possible to begin within 24 hours. Most people wait until they can comfortably drive themselves to appointments. A good rule of thumb is to get your first LDM within 2 weeks to ensure the smoothest results!
It has been over a month since I had my procedure! Is it too late to begin?
5
Nope, come on in! The healing process after these types of procedure is several months. If it has been over a month since your procedure you can still get the smoothing benefits of an LDM. If it has been over 6 months since your procedure and you are still feeling lumps and hardness you should contact your doctor to make sure you have not developed fibrosis or a seroma.
Do LDMs help with healing and bruising?
6
Yes. That is one of the best applications of MLD. Bruises are an accumulation of cellular debris and old red blood cells in the tissue. Lymph Drainage Therapy greatly reduces healing time for bruises by cleansing the extracellular spaces where these substances are trapped.
Do I need a prescription for MLD?
7
No. Although many doctors recommend post-surgery massages, it is also perfectly fine to self-refer.
What do I wear to a LDM?
8
If you're able to, we'll have you remove your faja (compression garments.) Most patients will prefer to wear a bandeau top and some loose basketball shorts. Some patients are quite confident and don't mind doing the session in their birthday suits. Either way, we'll have warm modesty towels to ensure your comfort throughout the duration of the massage.
